Farm Debt - Central government should write-off the outstanding dues of farmers owning less than 5 acres of irrigated land, and for those farmers who own 20 acres of non-irrigated lands

In support and to declare solidarity to :
Sri Mohan Dharia, Freedom Fighter and Former Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission who is on a hunger strike at Pune, Demanding Relief to the Debt-ridden farmers in ndia Eighty two year old Freedom Fighter, Cooperative Movement Leader and Environmentalist Sri Mohan Dharia is on a hunger strike since 14th of November 2006, demanding immediate government attention to the continuing disaster in the farming sector in the country - the Farmers Suicides.
The crisis in the agrarian sector, triggered by the anti-farmer policies of government is driving the farmers to increasing debt and suicide. Official statistics put the total suicides in a decade to 1.5 lakhs.
Farmers across the country has been asking the Dr Manmohan Singh Government and Sri Sharad Pawar´s Ministry of Agriculture to take effective steps to address the agrarian situation and stop farmers from suiciding. The packages that the Government has offered in the Vidharbha region and for the other states including for Wyanad and Palakkad in Kerala has not done anything to redeem the situation. Added to this, the Government is going ahead with policies that will further fuel the crisis, all in the name of helping the corporate and MNC-driven industrial growth to prosper.
The big question remains - Why is this behaviour continuing ? Why is the PM and CM silent over the hundreds dying every week ? Would the Government have done the same if a few corporates or even if a few officials in the governments or any other organised sector is forced to such extents? This Candle Light Vigil is organised to support Sri Mohan Dharia in his mission to get the farmers debt relief.
